What is Solid Phase Sintering of SiC Ceramics?

Solid-phase sintering means that the sintering aid does not produce a liquid phase during the sintering of SiC ceramics, but reacts in a solid state to densify the material. In 1975, Proehazka took the lead in using a small amount of B and C force sintering aids to successfully sinter SiC ceramics without any external pressure. The addition of B and C can significantly improve the sintering kinetics of Sic. And the sintering mechanism of Sic ceramics has been studied deeply. W. Baer et al. used Al and C as sintering aids to achieve success in pressureless sintering of SiC. After that, researchers chose Al-BC series additives to sinter sic ceramics. Wu Anhua et al. used a-SiC powder as the starting material, B and C powder as sintering aids, and adopted an appropriate hot-press sintering process to prepare a-SiC block with a relative density of 97.8% at 1950C and 25MPa. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of bulk ceramics are 383MPa and 4.95MPa.m, respectively. .JJCao et al . used Al-BC series sintering aids to sinter sic ceramics at 190C and under the conditions of 190C. The density is 3.18g/cm3, the fracture toughness is as high as 9. 5MP m1/2, and the sintered body has good performance. The point of the solid phase is to require a relatively low sintering temperature (greater than 2000C) to require a higher purity of the original powder material. The sintered body has low fracture toughness and strong crack strength sensitivity.
