Advantages of Vacuum Heat Treatment
Vacuum heat treatment technology was applied abroad earlier. American Hays Company and Japan Vacuum Research Institute successively developed vacuum quenching oil and water agent quenching medium in 1968, since then vacuum quenching technology has developed rapidly in heat treatment industry. From single-chamber furnace it developed to the multi-combination machine group. From general vacuum quenching it developed to high-pressure gas quenching, vacuum water-agent quenching, vacuum carburizing, vacuum carbonitriding and multi-component co-penetration. After decades of hard work, domestic vacuum furnace manufacturers have greatly improved their design, manufacturing level and quality. The use of domestic vacuum equipment to replace imported vacuum equipment has gradually increased, thereby reducing the production cost of the user unit. The application range of vacuum heat treatment is rapidly expanded. At present, it has been well used in vacuum heat treatment and vacuum chemical heat treatment of important parts such as various tool and die steel, stainless steel, bearing steel, carbon steel, cemented carbide, alloy steel and high alloy steel, because vacuum heat treatment has many advantages:
1) Vacuum heat treatment of bright quenching can be achieved. The workpiece is heated under atmospheric pressure without contact with air, and the surface will not be oxidized. When the vacuum degree in the furnace is pumped to 1~10-1Pa, the surface of the workpiece achieves the purpose of not decarburizing andnot carburizing, so as to achieve the purpose of bright quenching.
2) Degassing effect. When the vacuum degree is lower than the corresponding decomposition pressure of the metal or alloy, its oxide will decompose to form free oxygen and be immediately discharged out of the vacuum chamber,so that the quality of the workpiece is improved. Because the blank of steel parts will inhale a very small amount of hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide and other gases in the atmosphere during smelting, create tiny pores, which are easy to cause defects such as hydrogen embrittlement. Air will also enter during pressing, so for tool and die steel, the residual gas inside the workpiece can be pumped out by vacuum technology to make the structure pure. For cemented carbide, the residual gas inside the workpiece can also be evacuated by vacuum treatment.
3) The machining allowance after heat treatment can be reduced. Because there is no oxidative decarburization phenomenon in vacuum heat treatment, the distortion is very small and it is clean and bright.
4) Cleaning process. Vacuum heat treatment is a clean heat treatment process. It occupies an important position in the entire heat treatment process. It can improve product quality, change the appearance of heat treatment workshops, and improve the operating environment. It is a technology worthy of popularization and application.
5) Advantages in carburizing. The product quality of vacuum carburizing is better than that of controlled atmosphere furnace carburizing. For gear carburizing to control quenching deformation, after carburizing in controlled atmosphere furnace, it needs to be quenched and corrected with a quenching press, and its quality is sometimes as high as the technical requirements are not met, and it is difficult to ensure the uniformity of the carburized layer and carbon concentration distribution. Internal oxidation often occurs, resulting in the appearance of non-martensitic black structures, and productivity is sometimes affected. Carburizing of small and medium-sized gears and gear shafts and other workpieces in motorcycles, automobile reducers, automobile engines and other components with high requirements has gradually transitioned from controlled atmosphere carburizing to vacuum carburizing in qualified enterprises.
