Vacuum Brazing of Diamond Tools
Among diamond tools, in addition to tools made by vacuum sintering and electroplating, the use of brazed tools is increasing. The performance of this kind of tool is generally between the vacuum sintering tool and the electroplating tool, and at the same time, the cost performance is high, and it is suitable for mass production and use.
Comparing the lifespan of sintered metal bond and electroplated diamond grinding wheels, the lifespan of sintered tools is 3 to 4 times that of electroplated tools when processing stone. However, sintered tools also have disadvantages, not only the amount of diamond used is large, but also the cutting speed is limited due to the small chip space. Under the same working conditions, the life of brazed diamond tools can reach 50% to 70% of the life of sintered tools. Like electroplating tools, brazed tools use less diamond. During vacuum brazing, since the diamond and the grinding wheel substrate are not only mechanically bonded but also chemically bonded, the bonding force is relatively large and the service life is long. At the same time, this chemical combination is also conducive to the dissipation of heat, and there is a larger chip space, thereby reducing the amount of coolant used.
Vacuum Brazing Equipment
For the production of such tools, a RHVB high-temperature vacuum brazing furnace manufactured by the company SIMUWU is used. The high vacuum brazing furnace is composed of a double-layer water-cooled jacketed vacuum vessel. It adopts resistance heating, PLC control, and three-stage vacuum pump group, which can complete the process automatically. The process parameters selected when producing tools are determined by the brazing material used (active brazing material or nickel brazing material) and the strength and thermal stability of the diamond, as well as the base material used for the tool.
Matrix material
Standard turning steels or free-cutting steels with average levels of carbon content and strength are often used as base materials for grinding tools. Carbon steel and high-alloy stainless steel are also used as base materials. When these steels are used as base materials, most tools do not require a protective layer against corrosion. For very small and thin tools, hardened steel is also used as the substrate.
Brazing material
Active brazing materials can weld difficult-to-wet metal or ceramic materials, and the active element usually used is titanium. During vacuum brazing, titanium bonds to difficult-to-wet surfaces by forming titanium oxides, nitrides or carbides. The active braze reduces thermal stress between the diamond and the braze-base material.
Diamond can be welded together with various nickel brazing materials and active brazing materials. Nickel brazing materials are stronger and have better corrosion properties than silver-based active solders. Due to the higher welding temperature and hardness of nickel brazing materials, the negative effects of stress are less. If a less thermally stable, brittle diamond is used, the grains may break during cooling.
Vacuum Brazing Process
The stability of diamond is a very important issue. If the diamond undergoes a structural transformation during the vacuum brazing process, it can degrade the properties of the tool produced. The stability of diamond is related to many factors, especially brazing temperature, diamond type and different brazing materials. It is best to use diamonds that are very strong and thermally stable.
Grinding performance and tool life of brazed abrasives
The performance of brazed diamond tools is more than 3.5 times that of electroplating tools, and its tool life is at least 3 times that of electroplating tools. The main factors affecting tool life are: 1. The strength of diamond abrasive grains. 2. Bond strength between diamond and substrate. 3. Heat dissipation. 4. Blockage of chip space.
If you want to improve the life of brazing diamond tools, you need to match excellent vacuum brazing equipment. The vacuum brazing furnace selected for vacuum brazing is very important. The RHVB vacuum high-temperature brazing furnace produced by SIMUWU is an excellent product for brazing diamond tools. With its excellent temperature control accuracy and temperature uniformity, it can realize the brazing of workpieces evenly and evenly, so as to achieve high-level brazing standards, reduce scrap rate, increase production efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs.
