1.PCD tool
Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) tools are suitable for processing non-ferrous metals and their alloys and difficult-to-machine non-metallic materials (such as wood, laminate flooring, graphite, ceramics, stone, etc.). At present, the most widely used PCD cutter is to cut the PCD composite sheet into a certain size of the cutter grain, weld it with the carbide cutter body, and grind it. The PCD layer has high hardness, and the cemented carbide substrate has good toughness. The combination of the two makes the PCD composite sheet widely used in cutting, wood processing and drilling industries.
For the preparation of PCD tools, especially the preparation of various high-precision (dimensional tolerances up to 2um) and non-standard composite PCD tools, the most critical processes include welding, cutting and sharpening of PCD tools. The welding process not only determines the welding strength of the PCD insert, but also affects the cutting performance of the PCD cutting edge. For PCD tools with complex cutting edge shapes that cannot be sharpened, the required cutting edge can be obtained through rough cutting and fine cutting on a five-axis five-linkage CNC slow-moving wire-moving machine tool. For the cutting edge that needs to be lapped, a small margin can be left during high-precision cutting, and then lapped to meet the size requirements.
2.PCD tool making
There are many ways to make PCD tools, which are generally divided according to the heating method and the use of solder. During the production process, the heating method plays a decisive role, the choice of solder will have a significant impact on the welding quality, and the structural design of the welding joint is also an important means to improve the quality. Therefore, in the PCD tool manufacturing process, vacuum brazing has become its key technology.
Vacuum Brazing refers to the brazing and welding of parts in a vacuum state. Since this method is carried out in an atmosphere without oxidizing gas, it can obtain excellent joints with high strength, toughness and uniformity. It is an emerging welding method. Special equipment must be used for vacuum brazing. During the welding process, the welding temperature must be controlled while controlling the vacuum degree. Therefore, the process is complicated and the operation is difficult. At present, the vacuum brazing method is used to weld PCD oilfield drill bits, and the shear strength of the brazing seam can reach 451.9MPa.
3.Vacuum brazing of PCD cutting tools
For the preparation of PCD tools, the welding of PCD composite sheets and cemented carbide or steel substrates is very important. The welding methods of PCD mainly include laser welding, vacuum diffusion welding, vacuum brazing, high frequency induction brazing and so on. The vacuum brazing process of PCD composite sheet is one of the key technologies restricting the popularization and application of PCD cutting tools. As we all know, most of the vacuum brazing of cemented carbide adopts a high-temperature vacuum brazing process (brazing temperature is about 1000°), while the PCD composite sheet must use a low-temperature vacuum brazing process, otherwise it will cause thermal damage to the PCD composite sheet and affect its performance. cutting performance. However, the joint strength of low-temperature vacuum brazing is often relatively low, and it is easy to desolder during tool processing.
In the research on high-frequency induction brazing technology of PCD composite sheet, it is found that when high-frequency induction brazing PCD composite sheet, the welding temperature has the greatest influence on the welding strength. Through the research on the thermal stability of PCD composite sheet, the safety of brazing is determined: when brazing PCD composite sheet in air atmosphere, the brazing safe temperature should be lower than 650 °C.
In addition, when vacuum brazing PCD composite sheets, WC-based hard alloys with higher cobalt content (ie K-type hard alloys) should be preferred, which is conducive to improving the brazing strength.
